Mataranka

A lot of sheep and cattle stations in the outback have access to water via rivers, creeks and springs. A lot of special places probably never get seen by more than a hand full of owners, station hands or invited guests. which makes Mataranka Homestead pretty special. Part of Elsey Station founded in 1879, theContinue reading “Mataranka”

Into the tropical Zone

We’d put in some killer ‘k’s the last couple of days and found ourselves ahead of schedule. Tamika had put in a serious bid to visit Mataranka Hot Springs and we decided to make a couple of stops along the way to chew up some time. The first stop was completely unexpected. The tiny settlementContinue reading “Into the tropical Zone”

Namatjira Country

Our first stop on the road to Alice was the servo at the corner of Lasserters and Stuart Highway. The servo’s undergoing a refit and there are temporary bowsers set up for diesel and unleaded. There was a conga line of campervans and utes waiting for one pump and a B Treble at the other.Continue reading “Namatjira Country”

Uluru

Man, it’s hot out here!!  We’ve apparently caught the sting in the tail of summer even though it’s the middle of April.  We arrived at Curtin Springs mid-afternoon with the temp at an eyebrow singeing 37 degrees.  Even with a nice possie between some trees, we were desperate for any breeze.  The night gave usContinue reading “Uluru”

Bump and Grind

You know that inner voice? The one that says “Geez mate, the steels showin’ . Better change that tyre right away!” And then there’s that other voice, the one that dares you. “She’ll be right till you get to Alice Springs….trust me, I know theses things.” Usually, when that voice says “I know these things”,Continue reading “Bump and Grind”

White Man Down a Hole

More bleak landscape greeted us on our road to Coober Pedy.  We passed a sign that said Welcome to the Outback, but I swear it could have been a couple of hundred clicks earlier and not look out of place..  It was white line fever after a couple of hours as this video clearly shows…Continue reading “White Man Down a Hole”

Lake Hart

What better way to celebrate life back on the road than spending a lazy Sunday morning with tea, toast and Insiders. With only 170 klm on the agenda today we mozied through our pack up and headed into town for fuel. The truck stop option appeals because they have showers and bathrooms. Now to me,Continue reading “Lake Hart”

Grounded

The shuddering coming from underneath the Jeep, was nearly as angst ridden as our own. We had been made fully aware that Jeep repairs can be both complex and expensive. We took a modicum of comfort that most 4WD’s are money pits of varying depth but for some stupid reason we assumed that ours wasContinue reading “Grounded”

The Boot – SA’s Yorke Peninsula

Leaving Adelaide for the Yorke Peninsula is a dual carriage way delight all the way to Port Wakefield. A few klm futher on the Copper Coast Highway peels lazily away from Route 1that heads northwest to Port Augusta and beyond.  At Federation Corner, the road divides, both paths winding down each side to meet atContinue reading “The Boot – SA’s Yorke Peninsula”

Chasing the Coorong

Everybody has heard of The Coorong.  It’s a perennial talisman for conservationists, supporters of the Murray-Darling Basin scheme and an internationally recognised National Park.  The Coorong is a sliver of coastline running from west of Kingston SE to the mouth of the Murray, a distance of some 194klm’s. Now I’m sure the wildlife think itsContinue reading “Chasing the Coorong”
